From July 8 to July 22, 2013 in the framework of implementation of the international project of cross border cooperation between Estonia, Latvia and Russia ;«ARCHAEOLOGY, AUTHORITY & COMMUNITY: cooperation to protect archaeological heritage» with the support of the regional target program «The Young People of the Pskov Region» a volunteer camp for young people was working in Zalahtovye village, located in the Gdov district of the Pskov Region.

In close proximity to Zalahtovye village there is a complex of archaeological monuments, which includes: a Neolithic man site, several groups of barrows dating back to the 2 half of the I millennium A.D.- 6-7th centuries, including the biggest in the area of the Eastern Bank of Lake Chudskoye barrow necropolis, which counts over 250 barrows, several 8-12th century burial grounds, a medieval settlement’s site. The goal of the work of the volunteer camp was to define the borders of the territories which contain objects of archaeological heritage: the 11-12th century ancient settlement site and the burial ground dating back to the 8-15th centuries. The defining of the borders of the territories of these monuments will help preserve the objects of archaeological heritage, save them from being destroyed during the development of the bank of Lake Chudskoye.

Archaeological research covered the area of over 100 square meters (32 square meters in the ancient settlement site and 72 square meters in the burial site). 13th century burial grounds as well as the cultural stratum of the 11-12th century settlement were studied. Geomorphologists, anthropologists, archaeozoologists took part in this research work.
