ANOTHER RUSSIAN-ESTONIAN INSPECTION OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL MONUMENTS HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT

 

On May 21-23, 2013 in the framework of the implementation of «ARCHAEOLOGY, AUTHORITY & COMMUNITY: cooperation to protect archaeological heritage»project the inspection of the monuments of archaeology of the Western and Northern bank (Estonian Republic) of Lake Chudskoye was carried out. Estonian specialists who took part in the inspection were: Heiki Valk, Maria Smirnova, Liisa Kallas, Pikne Kama (Tartu), Russian specialists were represented by: Elena YakovlevaElvira KorolyovaAlexander Mikhailov (Pskov), Elena Mikhailova, Sergey Popov (St. Petersburg).

 

Over 40 objects of archaeology were inspected in North-Western Estonia, on the left bank of the Narova River, in the vicinities of Tartu and Otepää. They were stone burial chambers of III – V century A.D., burial mounds from the second half of the I millennium A.D., fortified and non-fortified settlements of the second half of the I millennium A.D. – early II millennium A.D., ground barrows dating back to the beginning of the II millennium A.D., and also sacred trees and cult stones, which are a group of ancient objects widely spread in the area of the Western bank of Chudskoye Lake.

During the trip Estonian colleagues showed their Russian partners a wide range of archaeological monuments, well known in archaeological literature, such as: ground barrows Lahepera and Raatvere, Jaagupi stone grave, Neuschloss Livonian Order castle (medieval Syrenets) at the Narova riverhead, the old settlements of Otepää and Rõuge.
