Seminar on digitized maps of archaeological monuments in Pskov

On March 10-11 2013 a seminar concerning the databases of archaeological monuments and their GIS application took place in Pskov, at Pskov Region Archaeological Centre. The meeting was organized by Pskov Museum and attended by Pskov Region Archaeological Centre, Pskov archaeological centre, the University of Tartu and the NGO Archaeological Centre (Tallinn).

During the seminar the Estonian and Russian partners compared their data concerning Setomaa / Pechory District with the aim to prepare a joint map of monument for this border region. It appeared that Estonian archaeological archives contain numerous data that have not been used by researches from Russia. The results of existing work, prepared in Excel format, were presented in the form of digitized maps.

As a result of discussion, decisions were made about the topographic maps that will be used for the digitized map of archaeological monuments of the project region. For the GIS application Google and Yandex maps, available for the public, will be used. Also conventional signs to designate monuments of different kind were agreed.

In the course of work also other questions that had emerged concerning the project databases were discussed and solved. In the structure of the databases for archaeological monuments, archaeological archives and archaeological bibliography some minor changes were introduced.

The partners discussed also the topic of common field works for the summer of 2013.
